UNDERSTANDING SOLAR ENERGY

1. Total Solar Energy
All the window heat that enters a room from direct sunlight. It is a combination of the factors listed below.

2. Solar Transmission
Total amount of solar radiant energy (heat) passing through window glass (glazing system).

3. Solar Absorption
Amount of heat that is absorbed by the glass and other objects in the path of the sunlight. These materials become warm or even hot.

4. Solar Reflection
Total amount of heat that is reflected back out of the window glass. Reflected heat is pushed out and consequently will not heat up the room.

5. Ultraviolet Transmission (Sun Fade protection)
The amount of UVA and solar energy passing through window glass.Ultraviolet light is the primary cause of fading and deterioraton of colors and finishes exposed to sunlight. Also it is a cause of skin cancer. A UV factor of 4 means it screens out 96% of ultraviolet light.

6. Shading Coefficient
The ratio of solar heat (radiant energy) of a window insulating system. Example: how much heat comes through the glass before and after using Solar-Screen window treatments. The numbers give protective values. A shading coefficient of .2 means only 20% of the solar radiant heat will go through the window and about 80% is rejected.

7. Solar Heat Gain (BTU/Hr/S.F.)
How much heat (BTU) builds up per hour (HR) through the amount of Glass Square Footage (S.F.)

8. Total Heat Gain

This is the most important rating and is a combination of the above listings. How hot the room will become based on the number of sunlight hours, times the area of glass, times the amount of heat.
